As we wait for Gustav to make landfall, we are distracting ourselves by touring Birmingham. Jill lives in downtown Birmingham right next to the University of Alabama (UAB), which is also where she works. James and I tooled around on foot visiting a park about two miles away and trying to get a look at the infamous rear end of the giant Vulcan statue. The statue was quite impressive though we never actually got around to the back side, because of some frustrating logistics involved with being on foot and not actually arriving at the correct location for viewing.
Still we had a nice time and sat in a shady spot enjoying the view of the city and the nice Gustav-induced breezy afternoon.
News from Tulane stated that it won't reopen until next Monday (the 8th) due to the mandatory evacuation of the city. Even if the storm is not that bad - the logistics of getting everyone back into the city are too complicated to make it reasonable to anticipate reopening any sooner.
So, we wait for storm news - watching it build - hope for the best, because it is pretty obvious that it is hitting our new home in some fashion.
Thanks to Jill and Pinky again for being fabulous hostesses.
